Caesar knows that it's not about flesh and bone. It's about control, which begets power, which begets control. What he wants is to simply suffocate her mind with anger and helplessness until she forgets that there had ever been a time when she had been strong. His metaphorical hands are around her throat, the thumbs pressing inward in anticipation of the crunch to follow.

As determined as Xena may be, at the end of the day she is just another foolishly proud woman. And Romans know better than any what is to be done with proud women.

"Break her legs."
